Gallery Studio Diary 2007 - 2008 Semester 2, 2007 Week 15 Firing

Firing

This album contains some images of the actual firing in electric, programmable kiln #9 at the Glasgow School of Art Ceramics Department. This is the same kiln I used for the previous firing in week 13.

The firing cycle was the following:

Program 0: start -> 700ºC
Ramp time: 14 hours (50ºC per hour)
Soak: 0mins
Program 1: 800ºC -> 1275ºC
Ramp time: 6 hours (100ºC per hour)
Soak: 30mins

The two programs were then run one after the other. When the kiln switched itself off, cone 10 still wasn't moving, so I reprogrammed it to reach a top temperature of 1280ºC in 30 mins. Cone 10 was half over by the time 20 mins had elapsed, so I switched the kiln off at that point.
