Gallery Studio Diary 2007 - 2008 Semester 2, 2007 Week 13 Firing to cone 9 1/2

Firing to cone 9 1/2

All the following Week 13 glaze tests were fired in this top loading, computerized, electric kiln at the Glasgow School of Art Ceramics Department.

This is kiln #9. According to the log book kept by previous users, it has a tendency to over-fire by about 10 degrees Celsius, so we set it to 1275ºC. When it reached what the pyrometer said was that temperature, the kiln soaked (or dwelled) for 10 minutes. It was very hard to see the cones, because the spy holes are in the lid, but I switched it off when I thought I could see cone 10 bending. As you will see in later photos. I wasn't far off.

I need to add though that my tests were on the 2nd shelf from the top, whereas the cones were on the top shelf, so there might have been a temperature difference.

The firing was put on on the 8th and shut off on the 9th of October. It was unpacked 24 hours later, on the 10th of October, 2007.
